Robert K. "Bob" Mattingly, 87, of Zanesville, died at 8:42 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2008, at Genesis Good Samaritan Campus surrounded by his family.

He was born Saturday, March 12, 1921, in Zanesville, the son of John Clement and Olivia Kerker Mattingly. He married Bette Allen Mattingly Monday, Jan. 27, 1941, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Thomas High School. He then served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the infantry.

Mr. Mattingly improved the lives of everyone he met, worked hard for what he believed in and didn't know a stranger. Bob and his wife, Bette, founded Mattingly Seafood in 1947, which is now Mattingly Foods Inc., a third generation family-owned and operated business employing over 265 people and serving customers in 16 states.

He served in the Zanesville Rotary, Muskingum County Foundation, Zanesville Jaycees, Zanesville Chamber of Commerce, and on the boards of Goodwill Industries, International Food Distributors Association and Nugget Food Group.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Bette; daughter, Barbara (Michael) Callahan; grandchildren, Andrew (Andrea) Hess, Benjamin (Shannon) Hess, Brandon (Jennifer) Hess, and Kelly Callahan; great-grandchildren, Alexa, Andrew, Anabelle, Michael and Brayden Hess; brother, John Mattingly; sister, Ernestine Dailey; and niece Suzanne (Peter) Thompson.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Campus Center at Zane State College, 1555 Newark Road, Zanesville.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Fr. S. Jordan McConway, O.P., as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mattingly Settlement Cemetery.
